PANAJI: Following the announcement by the Congress party leadership of declaring Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira welcomed the decision and said that he will work unitedly to revive and rebuild the party.
Commenting on reports that he was in the race for the post of CLP leader, he said, “We are three MLAs, so any one of us could have been appointed as CLP leader. We had met our party higher ups who had taken our views. I am happy that Yuri has been appointed as CLP leader. I congratulated him and told him that we will work together to revive the Congress party. Our motto and visions are that we should revive the party. We will do a good job given that all are together and all will remain together and will work together. Whatever the party has decided, I will always accept it,” he said.
“It’s not a matter of you and me, it’s a matter of working as a team and rebuilding the party. In politics, one can expect many things. You may have aspirations and hopes, you may succeed or not,” he said.
The Aldona MLA emphasised on the need to work as a team to meet the people’s aspirations .
“I am grateful that people hoped that I should have become the CLP leader. But it’s a very enormous task and responsibility. It means you have to traverse across the entire state looking after 40 constituencies. I didn’t want to neglect my constituency which will take a toll with this kind of work that comes along with this responsibility,” he said.
Responding to reports that Vijai Sardesai is planning to merge Goa Forward Party into the Congress party, Ferreira said if it does happen then the Congress will be strengthened,
“Vijai Sardesai is originally a Congressman and a firebrand leader, and is now holding the reins of the Goa Forward Party. We are in alliance with Vijai Sardesai. There is an ideological like mindedness between us, and this is what keeps us together. Vijai is a leader in his own right. I have known him since his student leader days. And if he does come, we will be strengthened further. It is time for all forces to realign to make sure that we defeat these kinds of forces that are defeating our nation, trampling upon the constitution and trying to make democracy redundant,” he said.
In view of the recent defections of eight Congress MLAs to the BJP, he said, “We will give our inputs to the party. and the party will take a decision. We have confidence that the party will take mature decisions. Our Congress party has ruled at the centre and state governments for many years and has given good governance. I think we will look at fresh ideas from new people. and take the wisdom of senior leaders,” he said.
