  3. AN APOSTROPHE IN GOAN NAMES LEADS TO INCONVENIENCE IN COLLECTION OF PROVIDENT FUND: TMCs DEREK O’BRIEN IN PARLIAMENT

Imagine facing a complication in collection of provident fund because of an apostrophe, hyphen, or other accents in your name? The issue was raised by TMC’s Derek O’Brien at the Parliament on the delay in dispersal of provident fund for those with Portuguese origin names in Goa and rest of India. He pointed that the computer software does not recognize the special accents and due to this people are facing hardship in redeeming their provident fund and NEFT transfers refused by Employee Provident Fund Office. The EPFO, he said, is asking people to change their surnames in Government documents. He questioned why the citizens should be made to undergo hardship or be made to change the name unnecessarily and illegally because the EPF software developer did not foresee this. He asked the Government to modify the EPFO software to accommodate the all names with an apostrophe as no one should be deprived of their provident fund and no one in Goa must be humiliated
