  3. ART FOR AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY: AUTISM AWARENESS DAY

On 2nd April, Autism Awareness Day, a programme was organised at The Art Park in Porvorim by TIES – Towards Inclusion Everywhere in Society – a parent support group of children with special needs. This programme was in collaboration with Sethu Centre of Child & Family Guidance who made presentations about the not so-known disorder called Autism.

Awareness & sensitisation of the public is the key to Inclusion of people with special needs in the society. And Art was the perfect medium to get the message across to the masses. An art competition on the theme Inclusion, was held for regular children of the ages 7- 10  years & 11- 15 years which saw a great response.

Children are the future citizens of the society & by sensitizing them we are sensitising a whole generation. It was also an opportunity for people with autism to be part of such programmes, many of them who have problems in socialisation and communication.

Stalls displaying the talent by children of special needs and organisations working with disabilities like The Owl House & Divya Sadan was another highlight of the event. There was a yoga display & performances by children with special needs too. The MLA of Porvorim & Minister Mr Rohan Khaunte attended the function and appreciated the efforts and has promised all support to the special needs community.

The park was lit up blue in tune with the theme of “Light it up Blue” for Autism. The event was supported by Rotary Club of Porvorim & Porvorim Rising.
