PANAJI: The 36 candidates of Congress Party on Saturday took pledge at Mahalaxmi temple, Bambolim Cross and Hazrat Mohamad HamzaShah Dargah-Betim saying they will not defect and will work unitedly in the interest of Goa.

Congress Senior leader and election strategist P Chidambaram, Goa In Charge Dinesh Gundu Rao, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, GPCC President Girish Chodankar and other leaders of Congress were present on the occasion along with all 36 candidates.

Digambar Kamat speaking on the occasion said that Congress is very serious about the perception of the people that if Congress candidates are elected then they switch to other parties. “We are very serious about this and will not allow any party to poach our MLAs. We are god fearing people. We have full faith in the almighty. Hence, today we have taken a pledge that we will not defect.” Kamat said.

He said that Congress was not only responsible for defections that happened in the past, but BJP was equally responsible for poaching their MLAs. “BJP gave them offers and hence they switched parties. We want to assure the people of Goa that it will not happen again.” Kamat said.

“Goans are not wholesale for purchase. Hence, aggressively we are working against the defections, which killed the democracy of Goa.” He said.

Kamat said that he has full faith in temple, cross and dargah and Goans practice communal harmony. “so we decided to take pledge before god and seek blessings.’’ He said.

The candidates took pledge saying they will be loyal to both the Congress party and the people of Goa.
