PANAJI: Drishti Lifeguards rescued 5 tourists including a 13-year-old from Gujarat in separate incidents at Querim, Morjim, Ashvem, Baga and Palolem beaches during Christmas weekend.

Candolim beach reported a rescue of a 13-year-old from Gujarat while another tourist was rescued at Cavelossim. In another incident that took place at the sweet water lake in Arambol, a female tourist was saved while Drishti lifesavers conducted a double rescue earlier at Palolem on Monday.

A group of five tourists entered the sea for a swim at the Candolim beach earlier today at 12:20 hrs. One of them was a 13 year old boy from Gujarat who drifted inside into the deeper sea. Another foreigner swimming close by, grabbed hold of the boy and alerted the lifesavers for help. Drishti lifesavers Achini Pemegam and Vinod Salekar rushed to the victim for help and secured him, bringing him ashore with a rescue tube.

At Cavelossim beach, at about 12:35 pm,, a group of people were bathing into the sea. Among them was a couple from Bangalore. A 29 year old lady who was among the group drifted into the sea. On noticing this, Drishti lifesavers Jayesh Velip and Surendra Velip rushed to the spot along with a surfboard and rescue tube and secured the victim.

At the sweet water lake in Arambol, around 20-25 people were bathing in the lake. Among them was a 35-year-old lady from Punjab. The tourist found herself in a dangerous rocky area. This alerted Drishti lifesaver Satish Satonkar who rushed to secure the victim with a rescue tube and brought her back to safety.

Two men from Santa Cruz, one aged 21 and the other aged 28, went kayaking at the Palolem beach. As they kayaked further, the kayak overturned into the deep waters and the duo found themselves in danger. Drishti Lifesavers Manjunath Pagi on duty informed the tower after which Drishti Operator Ramesh Velip rushed to the victims’ aid. The victims were secured on the jetski and brought them back to safety.

The Christmas weekend saw several rescues. Five people were rescued in separate incidents which took place at Querim, Morjim, Ashwem, Baga and Palolem beaches.

Drishti Marine, the State appointed lifesaving agency, had deployed additional lifesavers across beaches in North and South Goa as the beaches are packed with people as it’s the festive holiday season. Patrolling hours have been extended till 11 pm till the first week of January 2021. Additionally on December 24, December 25 the lifesavers manned the beaches till 1 am and will do the same on New Year’s eve on 31st December 2020.
