GOA GOVT WON’T COMPROMISE ON MHADEI RIVER OR FALL PREY TO ANY PRESSURES: CM PRAMOD SAWANT

PANAJI: Alleging that Karnataka has illegally diverted Mhadei river water, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated in the Goa Assembly that his Government will not compromise on Mhadei river and will not fall prey to any pressures to safeguard the interest in Mhadei basin.

Replying to a calling attention notice tabled by opposition members, Sawant told the House that Karnataka had illegally diverted Mhadei water without obeying the verdict of Supreme Court and Inter-State Mhadei River Disputes Tribunal. Goa Government has now filed a contempt petition in this regard, he said.

The Chief Minister said that Mhadei is Goa’s lifeline and Government is determined to protect future water security in Mhadei basin by forestalling all diversion of water from Mhadei basin.

Sawant also assured the House that if required, he will lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed confidence that Centre will not do injustice to Goa.

Sawant further informed that National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) team will visit Goa second time in the last week of February, to monitor the observations which will be followed their visit for lean season observations in May 2021.
