Good news for Goans across the world. You can now translate to our local mother tongue using Google Translate. The search giant confirmed the news that it has added Konkani along with other 23 new languages and dialects on its online translation service. The range of regions include: Bolivia, Chile, India, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and many more. This will help 300 million people globally access Google tools.

Did you know that Konkani is used by about 2 million people?

The other Indian languages included: Sanskrit (20,000), Assamese (25 million people), and Maithili (34 million people in northern India).

Reacting to the news, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said, “It is heartening to know that #Konkani language has been added in Google Translate. It’s a remarkable feat for our language. This will help in enhancing global outreach for Konkani speaking people as well as global access to Konkani language.I thank and congratulate all those who worked for making this facility available on a platform like #Google.'”

GPCC President, Amit Patkar, also commenting on the news, “Proud moment as our #Konkani joins 24 languages added onto Google Translate. It was Indian National Congress that gave Konkani recognition as official language. Let’s be proud of our Mother Tongue.’
