
The Institute of Public Assistance (Provedoria) will celebrate its 75th anniversary befitting the status of their Institute which has served the people of Goa, Daman and Diu and particularly, the needy, destitute, young and the old in their hour of needs.
Earlier, Provedoria used to run the lotteries and distribute the revenue derived from them to the various organizations, such as Hospicio Hospital, Asilo Hospital and many other Institution looking after health care. Subsequently, big Hospital projects were undertaken by this Institute and were run by appointing specialists considering the needs. Provedoria sponsored students to persue higher studies in Portugal in various fields such as ophthalmology, paediatrics and surgeries to meet local needs. In addition, monthly subsidies “Pensao” were regularly granted to the poor old persons. There were also old age homes and orphanages build and maintained at various places in Goa, Daman and Diu.
Provedoria was also been running a School for Disabled Children at Porvorim named Sanjay School for the Disabled with effect from 1989. This School has 3 sections – Shruti School for Deaf and Dumb, School for mentally Handicapped and Slow Learners School at Curchorem. Later Sanjay School was detached from IPA (Provedoria) in the year 2010.
The main objective of Provedoria is to provide relief, give not alms to poor but to provide shelter, care & protection to old and helpless persons in our society. To provide shelter, home, education, food and clothing and rehabilitation.
Provedoria is running 8 old Ages Homes for men and women and 2 Centers one each for boys and girls and two Half Way Homes from recovered Psychiatric patients transferred from IPHB at places mention below.
