PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral speaking to the media about his department, called for a ‘holistic plan’ that he’s planning to introduce to streamline the working of the PWD. He spoke about a system where “I have the plan to make a four-member committee to randomly check on estimates done by the department and also to gave random check on bills submitted to check whether work is done properly or not. Some roads that are in bad shape must be done. The committee will check the estimates, examine and give me an independent report. It will be for roads, buildings, water supply, and all departments. In sewerage, there are pending works from 2010, 2007, 2005, works still not completed.”
In order to ensure the maintenance of Government buildings, he said, ‘I will request the CM whatever repairs, maintenance in their budget estimate must be handed over to PWD directly. So, PWD will be fully responsible to maintain the buildings with just one inspection. PWD Engineers will visit the Government buildings and inspect the condition.’
For underutilized quarters of PWD, he said, “People now have cars to reach office. So our quarters are getting depleted. So whether we can give these quarters on rent to outsiders other than PWD because there are no takers from Government Departments. We will repair and take rent. It will be a source of income.”
He called for simplification of processes to ensure smooth flow.
