  3. STORMY SPECIAL MEETING AT MMC OVER VALUATION OF TWO SHOPS

The special meeting of Margao Municipal Council turned stormy when opposition Councillors questioned about valuations of the two shops at Gandhi market which were on auction. The CO, Agnelo Fernandes, said the issue dates back to 2007 and the file was not touched. “No one saw it. We wanted to revive it, so we re-auctioned it. The rates are fixed by PWD and I cannot say anything on it,” he clarified adding, “We awarded the auction to the highest bidder.” Given his exclusive powers to intervene, he said he will ask the parties to come and negotiate on the rate, at least double. “I, personally feel it is too less,” he commented.

Ganashyam Shirodkar Councilor alleged that it has been done to protect the interest of a concerned party. “This is wrong. If Municipality has to generate funds, how will they manage? I asked the CO to call for a meeting since he’s got the powers. There is no Government approval. For division of vote, it requires a two-third majority.
